I am a Stream

by Mandy Doerr

For some people are rocks, solid and rooted.
Some people are bursts of wind whirling around.
While some people are flames, intense and sooted.
Some people are waves that upon beaches pound.

Some people are bursts of wind whirling around.
I am a stream, full of energy and dancing.
Some people are waves that upon beaches pound.
I mist the earth and the fern with my prancing.

I am a stream, full of energy and dancing.
I flow over stones and splash in the sun.
I mist the earth and the fern with my prancing.
I am the music to which children run.

I flow over stones and splash in the sun.
I jump over waterfalls and slide down the hill.
I am the music to which children run.
The valley and mountain only temper my will.

I jump over waterfalls and slide down the hill.
Once in awhile a dam gets in my way.
The valley and mountain only temper my will.
Though faced with a dam I feel some dismay.

Once in awhile a dam gets in my way.
My currents swirl as I try to get out.
Though faced with a dam I feel some dismay.
I labor to keep down my rising doubts.

My currents swirl as I try to get out.
I feel as if in a terrible dream.
I labor to keep down my rising doubts.
Then I remember I am a stream.

I feel as if in a terrible dream.
As I rise against the offending wall.
Then I remember I am a stream.
And over the dam I soon will fall.

As I rise against the offending wall.
Temporarily subdued, but not contained.
And over the dam I soon will fall.
I will be able to mist the fern again.

Temporarily subdued, but not contained.
The sun and I share an impish laugh.
I will be able to mist the fern again.
And give those dusty rocks a bath.

The sun and I share an impish laugh.
As around the boulders, I careen.
And give those dusty rocks a bath.
I will always be a stream.

As around the boulders, I careen.
This thing I will remember still.
I will always be a stream.
For such is my God's will.

This thing I will remember still.
As I let the diamond droplets fall.
For such is my God's will.
To be a sparkling stream is my call.

As I let the diamond droplets fall.
Many people will never understand.
To be a sparkling stream is my call.
Since I know a stream is what I am.

Many people will never understand.
For some people are rocks, solid and rooted.
Since I know a stream is what I am.
While some people are flames, intense and sooted.

For some people are rocks, solid and rooted.
Some people are bursts of wind whirling around.
While some people are flames, intense and sooted.
Some people are waves that upon beaches pound.
